Tour of Istanbul. Alessandro Romele finishes second on Stage Two
Alessandro Romele from Astana Qazaqstan Development Team, racing for the UCI WorldTour team Astana Qazaqstan Team, took second place on the second stage of the stage race Tour of Istanbul. After the first stage, which ended in a sprint from a small group of leaders where Romele finished fifth, today the Italian rider launched an attack 12 km from the finish alongside Frenchman Mathieu Burgaudeau and Dane Magnus Klaris.
In the end, Romele finished second, trailing stage winner and new overall leader Burgaudeau by 4 seconds, while gaining 14 seconds on the chasing group. As a result, Alessandro Romele moved up to second place in the overall standings of the Tour of Istanbul.
“Today was a super tough stage, but after yesterday, I knew I was in great form, so I needed to seize the moment and aim for a top result. We started off well: Pronskiy got into the breakaway, and the rest of the team did a great job helping me throughout the stage. In the final 25 kilometers, I tried attacking multiple times on the climbs, but a rider from TotalEnergies was with me, having his GC leader behind and conserving the energy. On the final kilometer he attacked, and I just couldn’t hold on. Tomorrow is another day, and we will definitely try again”,– said Alessandro Romele.
